In the recording that forms the basis of the composition, two elements act as tonic and signal, respectively: the sound of the grackles and a loud siren. The siren, a disturbing element, has been time-stretched to transform it into brushstrokes of color, thus entering a new temporal and gestural dimension. These brushstrokes of color unfold against the background sound of the grackles.

VIETNAM VIET XUYEN funeral recording 16.23, 7 thg 12
(My grandfather’s funeral was according to village customs)
City: Làng quê Recorded by: Nhat Vuong Nguyen Trinh
This composition was created using exclusively a recording of a traditional Vietnamese funeral ceremony. Fragments were taken from the original track and subsequently manipulated. In particular, the resonances produced by the percussive instrument were extracted, thus creating long sound bands, onto which the distant dirge is grafted. The intent was to create an internal acoustic vision imagined from the deceased’s perspective.

The recording is from April 7, 2025 and was made at Lake Chiusi located in the Val di Chiana in the province of Siena, Tuscany. A small floating dock was chosen as the audio recording point. The banging of the dock accompanies the listening of the lake soundscape. It is the lake itself that, with its movement, ‘plays’ this dock. The random rhythm generated is grafted onto the very rich acoustic environment of the lake.

The recording is from April 17, 2025. The recording point was chosen under the iron bridge that crosses the Tiber River near the town of Pretola a few kilometers from Perugia in Umbria. Interesting reflections and resonances are created under the bridge. Water is certainly the dominant acoustic element but its veil is constantly torn by a multitude of sounds. The bridge, despite being located in a densely populated and busy area, isolates the urban environment creating a capsule of natural sounds.

The recording is from April 16, 2025 at 16:27 and was made at the Parco della Pescaia, a small park located in the south-west area of the city of Perugia, Umbria, Italy. The Park occupies an area characterised by the presence of a system of basins for collecting spring water from the area as well as water from the Pescaia ditch which ran alongside the current park, and which were used both for irrigation purposes and for fish farming. This park bears witness to an ancient time when the soundscape was profoundly different, with a high acoustic definition.
Today the park is completely surrounded by roads, buildings and concrete. What you hear is the fragile balance between two acoustic ecosystems.

Submerged breaths

Program notes
The soundscape composition “Submerged breaths” is the portrait of a landscape poised between the imaginary and the real with its ears immersed in water. What does or could the world sound like while underwater? The composition was created using exclusively recordings made with a hydrophone immersed in the waters of the Tiber river in Umbria. These recordings are present both original and manipulated.
The structure of the composition is a slow crescendo in which natural sounds are slowly deconstructed until they are devoured and overwhelmed by a distorted mass: it is the perennial relationship between the dynamics of nature and those of man. A relationship in which these two entities contrast and merge at the same time.
The beginning and end of the piece coincide, natural life and human action are shown enclosed within a cycle: they are born and die together.

Program notes
“Bodega Bay” is inspired by the film of Alfred Hitchcock “Birds” of 1963.
The composition is a sound narration of a journey across the bay where much of the film is set.
This journey is to be understood as a psychic, intangible path, an involuntary path of the mind that can determine a dangerous drift.
No mimetic representation then. No material simulation. But a tension towards the symbolic abstraction of a possible journey of the human spirit.
The wayfarer, closed in his subjectivity, runs through this chimerical and magmatic space without any purpose, enveloped in a hostile and unpredictable nature up to the freedom intended both as an end and as overcoming and resolving.
The composition is divided into four parts:
Part 1 [0:00 to 3:52] arrival at bay
Part 2 [3:52 to 6:19] start of the journey
Part 3 [6:19 to 9:56] across the bay
Part 4 [9:56 to 11:50] freedom
Nessuna raffigurazione mimetica quindi. Nessuna simulazione materiale.
