The proposed soundtrack for the silent film "Le spectre rouge” (Pathé, 1907), was created using a very narrow palette of timbres, to accommodate the claustrophobic and alienating inclination of the events that come to life within a place that is instead kaleidoscopic, deep and surreal. Sounds are mostly coming from manipulations of white noise and concrete sounds that play on different environmental levels, underlining, with a current point of view, what today appear as errors or inaccuracies in video editing and post production. For the same reason, few selected sound processing techniques were used, which guaranteed synesthetic unity between listening and vision: time-stretching, pitch-shifting, ring modulation and granular synthesis. The incursion of musical fragments from different periods and different styles aims to outline an ideal path between different historical eras, as in an intuition of possible futures (up to nowadays), affirming the visionary and avant-garde nature of the film, where the magical and surreal appearance of screens and containers that transmit images in motion constitutes a dazzling foreshadowing of the television medium, of streaming habits using devices and wall mapping techniques.

La colonna sonora proposta per il film muto "Le specter rouge" (Pathé, 1907), è stata realizzata utilizzando una tavolozza timbrica molto ristretta, per assecondare l'inclinazione claustrofobica e straniante degli eventi che prendono vita all'interno di un luogo invece caleidoscopico, profondi e surreali. I suoni provengono per lo più da manipolazioni di rumore bianco e suoni concreti che giocano su diversi livelli ambientali, sottolineando, con un punto di vista attuale, quelli che oggi appaiono come errori o imprecisioni nell'editing video e nella post produzione. Per lo stesso motivo, sono state utilizzate poche tecniche selezionate di elaborazione del suono, per garantire un'unità sinestetica tra ascolto e visione: time-stretching, pitch-shifting, ring modulation e sintesi granulare. L'incursione di frammenti musicali di epoche e stili diversi mira a delineare un percorso ideale tra epoche storiche diverse, come in un'intuizione di futuri possibili (fino ai giorni nostri), affermando il carattere visionario e avanguardistico del film, dove il magico e l'aspetto surreale di schermi e contenitori che trasmettono immagini in movimento, costituisce un'abbagliante presagio del mezzo televisivo, delle abitudini di streaming che utilizzano dispositivi e tecniche di wall mapping.

Two human bodies. Two anonymous and unique entities. This is a short narration of the struggle and conflict first, and of the discover of knowledge and reconciliation then. A paradigmatic axis of every human relation told through the exteriority of the animal behaviour. This is a story of strangeness bearer of violence and those misunderstanding which creates obstacles and makes people blind. This piece draws on the exploration, the circumspection and the diffidence which guide the path to knowledge up to both the reconciliation and the osmotic fusion, as well as the feeling of getting lost into another entity and lastly to the sublimation of the human relation taken to the extreme. Finally, this is a tale about the reacquisition of the individuality, the re-appropriation of one’s own integrity ready for a new journey where the atavistic process repeats itself tending to infinity. A tale built by corporeal shapes, by the organic movement of muscles and skin, and by the altered and nobilitated concreteness of the flesh.

Due corpi umani. Due entità anonime e allo stesso tempo uniche. Una breve narrazione della lotta e del conflitto, prima, e della scoperta, della conoscenza e riconciliazione, poi. L’asse paradigmatico di una qualsiasi relazione umana raccontato attraverso l’esteriorità del comportamento animale. L’estraneità portatrice di violenza, la non comprensione che ostacola e rende ciechi. Poi l’esplorazione, la circospezione e la diffidenza che guidano il processo della conoscenza fino alla riconciliazione e alla fusione osmotica; il senso di perdersi in un’altra entità, la sublimazione della relazione umana portata all’estremo. Infine la riacquisizione dell’individualità, la riappropriazione della propria integrità, pronta per un nuovo viaggio in cui il processo atavico si ripete all’infinito. Un racconto costruito con forme corporee, con il movimento organico di muscoli e pelle, e la concretezza alterata e nobilitata della carne.

Gusseisen. Literarly “iron casting”. The metamorphosis of bodily form. The opposition of the material states. The white-hot and bright liquid which conceals yet magnifies a colourless hardness ready to endure time. The movement becomes stasis.
An individual conflict founded on the ineluctable mental solitude, harbinger of potential chimerical scenarios. The epiphany of memories or fantasies, as well as desires and denials is founded on strips of never-ending antinomies.
The alternation becomes a mass which submerges and deforms the facets of identity and of its vital and absolute uniqueness within a progressive internal tension. At the end of the voyage the mass resurfaces affirming its own being, resolving itself.

Gusseisen. Letteralmente “colata di ferro”. La metamorfosi della corporeità. L’opposizione degli stati della materia. Il liquido incandescente e luminoso che cela in potenza la durezza incolore pronta a resistere impassibile al tempo. Il movimento che diviene stasi.
Un conflitto individuale fondato sull’ineluttabile solitudine mentale, foriera di possibili scenari chimerici. L’epifania di ricordi o finzioni, di desideri e negazioni, fondata su fasce di continue antinomie.
Nella progressione del dissidio interiore l’alternanza diventa massa che sommerge e deforma le sembianze dell’identità, dell’unicità vitale e assoluta che, al termine del viaggio, riemerge nell’affermazione del proprio essere, risolvendo se stessa.

Only his eyes guide us. Only his gaze shows the places crossed in a convulsive and lame way. The protagonist suddenly wakes up and begins his day. A journey in which the real and the unreal dissolve within a dreamlike and suspended time. Natural spaces. Urban spaces. The environments follow one another frantically, overlap, confuse and merge into short indistinct masses. It is an insecure and uncertain race, perhaps an escape or the conquest of a destination; a continuous vacillation that leads to repeated falls. What did all this have been and what was it imagining. The final holds the question in suspense and the occurrence of a resolution or a definitive fall remains in doubt.

Solo i suoi occhi ci guidano. Solo il suo sguardo mostra i luoghi attraversati in modo convulso e claudicante. Il protagonista si sveglia all’improvviso e inizia la sua giornata. Un viaggio in cui il reale e l’irreale si sciolgono all’interno di un tempo onirico e sospeso. Spazi naturali. Spazi urbani. Gli ambienti si succedono freneticamente, si sovrappongono, si confondono fino a fondersi in brevi masse indistinte. È una corsa insicura e incerta, forse una fuga o la conquista di una meta; un vacillamento continuo che porta a ripetute cadute. Cosa di tutto questo è vissuto e cosa immaginato? Il finale tiene in sospeso l’interrogativo e rimane in dubbio l’accadere di una risoluzione o di una caduta definitiva.
